Free audio books now available

As of Oct 1, 2009, our netlibrary service will no longer be available. Even though the service has been popular here in Soda Springs and across the state, the state can no longer fund the program. But there are audio books and ebooks available and for free! These books are primarily classics and have been recorded by volunteers. Below is a list of sources to try. The library can assist you in downloading the audio books and putting them on your MP3 player, so just ask. There is no need to set-up separate accounts and passwords and the audiobooks are not encrypted like they are with paid services. These services are provided free of charge and are supported by voluntary donations and grants. Visit each service for more information

Project Gutenberg

These audiobooks are available in a variety of formats including MP3, Itunes, and others. These audiobooks are also split up into multiple files based on chapter, so no need to download huge files that take hours. Many favorite classics can be found here including most of Jane Austen's books. If you like the Wizard of Oz, most of those are available too. The audiobooks are denoted with a speaker and the ebooks by a book.

Librivox

This service is similar to Project Gutenberg. Books are recorded by volunteers, so books may have one or multiple readers. Some books are released as podcasts, which you can listen to directly over the internet. All can be downloaded in a similar fashion to Project Gutenberg, a chapter at a time, or in one big download. Just enter search terms into the search box to find what you are looking for.

Literal Systems

This service has fewer titles and these audio recordings are protected by copyright. They are provided free of charge. These audio books are professionally recorded by actors.
